Guest Blogger: Marisa!

Today we are lucky enough to have a guest blogger!
A warm GVG welcome to Marisa!

Global Village Gifts is one of the hidden treasures of Logan, UT. Not only is it located in a quaint part of town and full of unique and beautiful merchandise, but it is such a great cause. I love going in often to see what new items have been brought in from around the world and knowing the items were hand made and have rich back stories.
One of my favorite purchases is a beautiful necklace from Indonesia. I receive so many compliments every time I wear it and I love knowing it's unique and one of a kind. I love telling people that I purchased it locally from a fair trade store here in Logan. However, buying amazing culturally rich products is just part of the reason I love this shop. With each purchase I know that I'm helping someone in need earn fair wages.

Do YOU have a Global Village Product that you LOVE?
Be the next guest blogger!
Email us and tell us about favorite items that you have purchased
or that are on your Christmas list!
Thanks!

And, as always, thanks for supporting Fair Trade!

Fair Trade Federation

Here is some information from the Fair Trade Federation.  Check it out!!

FTF logo
Dear FTF Members,

August already - time to start checking things off of the summer bucket list.  What are you determined to accomplish before summer is over?  (My list is too long to mention - I suspect I'm not the only one!)
1. Fair Trade Principles Handout:  We're always looking for ways to spread the word about fair trade!  So, we've developed a new handout that explains the nine Fair Trade Principles in an easy to read format.  Click here to download a pdf version that is ready for you to cut, print and distribute. Click here to download a powerpoint version that is customizable with your organization's own logo and tagline.

Wholesalers, these make great "box stuffers" to add into your shipments.  Retailers and cafes, we hope these help you educate consumers about fair trade.  (And, as always, a complete description of the Principles is available at www.FairTradeFederation.org/principles.)

2. FTF Listserrvs and Google GroupsWe've created two new google groups to help FTF members connect and share information.  And, of course, our existing listserrvs are still up and running.  Join the groups that are most relevant to your business (and feel free to join more than one!)

-NEW! Commodities and Agricultural Wholesalers-  To join, send an email to
ftf-commoditiesagriculture+subscribe@googlegroups.com
-NEW! Cafe Network - To join, send an email to ftf-cafes+subscribe@googlegroups.com
-Retailers: To join, send an e-mail to ftfretailers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
-Wholesalers: To join, send an e-mail to WFTF-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
-FTF members (general): To join, send an e-mail to ftfederation-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
Have a great weekend,

With this newly set up blog I hope to keep GVG customers and interested patrons up to date on all the exciting and interesting events, upcoming and current, that are happening at GVG.

I will be featuring items that we have available at the store, updates on upcoming events and education about our artisan's cultures and the opportunities and challenges they face.

We are always interested in new volunteers.  GVG is fully run on the donated labor of volunteers of all types.  We have plenty of opportunities for anyone interested.

Global Village Gifts is a fair trade store in Logan.  We sell gifts and artwork from developing countries

A little more about us ....

Our Mission------
Global Village Gifts is committed to maintaining a viable not-for-profit retail store featuring fairly traded handcrafts from artisans around the world. Focus is on educating the public on the principles of fair trade and learning about the artisans.

Volunteers---------
Volunteers are the life-blood of our organization. The donated labor makes possible the fair trade compensation we offer our artisans. We encourage the active involvement of volunteers at all levels of Global Village Gifts. Volunteers serve without expectation of compensation other than reimbursement of direct expenses. Recruiting is everyone's responsibility! Because our intent is to broaden and expand the volunteer involvement of our community, recruitment is always pro-active and ongoing.

History----------
Global Village Gifts opened to the public Nov. 7, 2003 under the umbrella of Ten Thousand Villages, Utah. In September 2005, with the blessing of Ten Thousand Villages, Utah, we incorporated independently as Global Village Gifts. The company is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation committed to promoting intercultural understanding. Global Village Gifts (GVG) provides vital, fair income to third world people by marketing their handcrafted items and telling their stories. We educate volunteers, customers and the Cache Valley community about our artisan's cultures and the opportunities and challenges they face.

Our major supplier for GVG is Ten Thousand Villages, an economic development program of the Mennonite Central Committee since 1946. Ten Thousand Villages purchases handicrafts from artisan cooperatives in developing countries and distributes the merchandse through its warehouse in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Volunteers are used extensively to keep expenses low.

The other major supplier for GVG is SERRV International, a nonprofit alternative trade and development organization. Their mission is to promote the social and economic progess of people in developing regions of the world by marketing their products in a just and direct manner.
